17th century Copenhagen attracted some of Europe’s most distinguished singers and musicians. Generous salaries offered by the Danish court, in contrast to the wartorn Germanic lands, made the city particularly appealing for foreign composers most notably Weckmann, Bruhns and Foerster – protegés of Schütz and Buxtehude. »Captain Foerster« was in fact employed both as singer and Kapellmeister at the Danish court.
