English viol consort music from the Renaissance enforced a strict equality among the parts which all shared equally in the imitative material. JS Bach’s strict keyboard works were likewise devoted to a stunning kaleidoscope of combinations among equal voices. In this programme, the viol consort Phantasm embarks on a mission to apply the consort principle to Bach’s fugal works so as to uncover the hidden riches concealed behind the more neutral resources of the harpsichord and organ and thereby liberate the characters lurking behind the scenes within Bach’s fascinating polyphonic lines.
